Care to sip on a cocktail this summer as you’re strolling down Englewood’s South Broadway strip? Well, you’re in luck!

Today KDVR reported that last week, Englewood City Manager Shawn Lewis issued an emergency order creating a “designated zone” where visitors can consume drinks while strolling the streets. The zone is centered along South Broadway bordered by Eastman Avenue on the north, Acoma Street on the west, Lincoln Street on the east and Hampden Avenue on the south.

The order mandates that alcohol consumed in public must be purchased from bars or restaurants within the designated zone, and drinks must be in paper or plastic to-go cups with lids.

Lewis said the idea came about after requests from several business owners to expand patio areas for social distancing. Most of the bars and restaurants have been operating on a take-out or delivery only basis for months, so business owners are hopeful that the relaxed liquor laws will be a draw for customers new and old.

Customers will be able to browse the area and check out other shops, restaurants and businesses along the corridor while sipping their drinks. According to Lewis, Englewood is the first spot in the Denver metro area to implement an open container district.

Public consumption of alcohol is allowed within the designated zone from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The emergency order expires on December 31, 2020, at which time city leaders may opt to let it expire, extend the order or adopt a permanent law going forward.

Englewood is quickly becoming a popular area for those who want an urban environment without the hassle of downtown living. If you’re interested in checking out this family-friendly and vibrant neighborhood, contact Metrowest – we’d love to show you around!
