If the pandemic as taught us anything, it’s that Coloradans excel at finding or developing communities that fit their preferred lifestyles. For many around the country, that has meant looking beyond the suburbs and moving to exurban areas in recent decades.

The term “exurb” typically refers to communities that exist beyond the traditional suburban areas but are still economically connected to a large metropolitan area. To qualify as an exurb, a community must also feature low housing density. Essentially, exurbs allow citizens to enjoy a more rural, spacious living environment, while still allowing for reasonable access to the benefits and resources of a big city as long as they’re willing to commute.

For many, exurbs offer the best of both worlds, so it should come as no surprise that these kinds of communities have been growing and thriving all around the country as more and more Americans discover the benefits and lifestyle they allow.

CapRelo, a global mobility firm specializing in U.S. relocation, identified which exurbs are seeing the largest upticks in population. Researchers gathered data from the American Communities Project and the Brookings Institution to analyze more than 300 exurban communities in each state.

According to CapRelo’s research, the following 10 exurbs have seen the most growth over the last 30 years:

1. Douglas, Colo.: 481.47% growth

2. Forsyth, Ga.: 454.07% growth

3. Williamson, Texas: 323.18% growth

4. Lincoln, S.D.: 296.24% growth
